What is Vision Zero?

Our Goal, And the Steps That Will Take Us There

Vision Zero is an initiative started in Sweden in 1997 that aims to bring deaths and serious injuries on our roadways to ZERO. Many nations and cities have committed to the Vision Zero goal, and in doing so, have acknowledged that traffic violence is a worldwide problem that needs to be solved. New York City instituted Vision Zero in 2014 after a spate of devastating and entirely preventable deaths on our city streets, including the tragic killing of five children in five weeks. The Youth Council was founded in 2015 to bring the Vision Zero goal to fruition, quickly and effectively, using kids' powerful voices to change the landscape of traffic safety. With our help, NYC has lowered the speed limit and adopted a comprehensive speed safety camera program that protects school children throughout the city. These monumental changes have saved countless lives in recent years but attention to the program is waning. The Vision Zero goal is being forgotten by lawmakers and people are dying because of it. To stop the constant bloodshed on our streets we have to change them, we have to create the infrastructure to promote safe driving, and better laws and enforcement to protect the most vulnerable people on the streets, like us teens. There are many things that can be done to save lives and to improve every life. So GET INVOLVED and make a difference!
